John
Blackburn sarsaparilla burdock dandelion
I
would have liked to buy this bottle, but the seller would not ship outside the States.
"This bottle has a most unusual logo: it reads JOHN BLACKBURN REGISTERED
sarsaparilla burdock dandelion (with pictures of each) TRADEMARK FAILSWORTH".
There's
another on sale ending 28th May I'm bidding for. Arrived 8th June - well
worth it.
If
only this had caught on instead of Coke.

Ennis Hanly Blackburn Coffee company
This wonderful old tea tin was the product of
the Ennis Hanly Blackburn Coffee company in Kansas City Missouri. The brand name
was Golden Wedding. It was otherwise known as "Green Gunpowder" as
advertised on the tin. This container is in fairly good condition although it
has some dents and scratches. The colors are still quite bright and there are no
holes or rust...see the pictures. It would make a dandy and affordable addition
to anyone's collection.

This is the same company, but
worthy of addition just for the photographic technique - two mirrors at
right-angles to show the sides (and the vendor with camera). Ingenious.
YOU ARE BIDDING ON A OLD COFFEE CAN FROM THE ENNIS-HANLY-BLACKBURN COFFEE CO., KANSAS CITY. THIS CAN IS IN GREAT SHAPE, IT
HAS A FEW SCRATCHES THUS I WOULD GRADE IT A 8 ON A 10 SCALE. THERE IS A HOLE IN
THE CENTER OF THE LID ABOUT THE DIAMETER OF A PENCIL.
At the time of writing, with three days to go, the price on eBay is a
remarkable $46. I only paid $4.95 for my (admittedly much smaller) "dandy
tea tin".
Here's a rather better picture added 7th Sept 2001.

Gould, Wells & Blackburn-Madison
This spice tin is from Paradise Farm Brand Paprika spice tin and is
from Gould, Wells & Blackburn-Madison, WISC. Kind of rough but still a
nice piece for the collector.
This one just makes it in, but does not
merit a bid. |

They did Mace too -
This very old spice tin contains mace. It
is a one ounce tin from Gould, Wells & Blackburn Distributors in
Madison, Wisconsin. We're not sure how the dispenser top works. It has
five holes on one side and is solid on the other. Maybe it's open under
the solid side and you would take the whole top off and switch to the open
holes? Some rust. Some wear. Not new. |

Well this one just sneaks in - someone more interested in steam trains
than the Blackburn Conglomerate sent this postcard. Here's the
description:
The identification on the locomotive is
very faint but it looks like CM&STL. May be Milwaukee & St. Louis
Railroad. The building in the back is Gould, Wells, and Blackburn,
Wholesale Grocers and Coffee Roasters. The card is used and postmarked
from Milwaukee, Wisconsin, Feb ?, 1909, 1c stamp in place. Unfortunately
the sender wrote on both sides of the card over everything except the
locomotive. Evidently the man on the ground was known to the sender and
receiver since there is an arrow drawn to him. |

This was very nearly the greatest find so far.
RARE TYPE READS "JAMES HODSKINSON
BLACKBURN 1859". THESE EARLY SLAB TYPES ARE GREAT THERE ARE SEVERAL
TYPES AROUND THIS IS A RARER ONE. MINOR LIP NICKS HAIRLINE ON SIDE.
Jan's maiden name is Hodgkinson, so
that and a Blackburn reference would have been a wondrous artifact. But
not quite and the seller's starting price is a ridiculous $110.
If it comes round again at $40 I will.
The Hodgkinson -
Blackburn linkage problem has been solved
here.

Blackburn's
Sourpuss
Just like Cranny on the label, your face will pucker up and turn red with
this delightful cranberry hot sauce. There is no finer condiment for hot
food lovers to put on turkey and roast chicken. It is sensational on
sandwiches, magnificent with wild game, great at Thanksgiving and year
round. Ingredients include cranberries, honey, chile peppers, and oranges.

A correspondent alerted me to Blackburn Syrup - thanks, Tom - and just a
few days later some appeared on ebay, but the seller couldn't ship it for
a reasonable price. Here's the original text and a rather poor picture
from the sale.
Blackburns who make syrup The next
time you visit Jefferson, Texas, 60 miles northwest of
Shreveport, Louisiana, be sure and stop by the T. J. Blackburn Syrup
Works. They manufacture high grade syrup, jams, jellies and
preserves, and have been well known in that part of the country
since 1928.
The people who run the place trace their lineage back to a William and
Rachel Blackburn, who lived in South Carolina in the 1700s. Descendents
made their way from South Carolina through Alabama to Texas, stopping
along the way to raise their various families. The T. J. Blackburn
Syrup Works was started during the depression by one of William's
great-great-great-great-grandsons, Thomas Jefferson Blackburn, in Cass
County, Texas. We're told Mr. Blackburn was given the formula for
the syrup by a tramp passing through town. He mixed up a batch in a
washpot, put it in some gallon jugs, and, as they say, the rest is
history. Now the grandchildren of Thomas Jefferson and Lurline Smith
Blackburn operate the works.

177 YEAR OLD BOTTLE DATED 1823 E. HARPER
BLACKBURN WHISKY GREEN GLASS BOTTLE
A pal, Colin, from Blackburn advises,
Your 177 year old
Harpers bottle ... most probably dates from 1900 -30, it has an internal
screw thread. If the 1823 is embossed on the base, it is most probably a
patent number, not the year it was made. I can't recall exactly what time
period Harpers were in business, but it certainly wasn't that early.
