1.1. Great Britain issued the first postage stamp, the Penny Black, in 1840

1.2 Southern Ireland, Eire, became the Irish Free State in 1922 and left the British Empire in 1949.

1.3 The Channel Islands were occupied by Germany during the second World War and stamps were issued at that time.

1.4 GB Regional Issues were made for the mainland countries, Channel Islands and Isle of Man, mostly in the 1960s, but with England having to wait until 2002.

1.5 The Channel Islands and Isle of Man gained postal independence in 1969 and 1973 respectively

1.6 Guernsey began issuing stamps for Alderney (also valid throughout Guernsey) in 1983
