New York: Robert M. McBride & Company, 1929, 168 pages. Hardcover. CONTENTS: One of the most popular adventure books of
seventeenth-century Holland. It describes the East Indian Voyage of Captain
Bontekoe made between December, 1618 and November, 1625 and the many
wonderful and perilous happenings experienced. The oldest multinational
corporation in history was the VOC (United Company for the East Indies), a
trading company that existed from 1602 to 1799. In 1618, the VOC sent the
ship Nieuw-Hoorn, with Willem Bontekoe as captain, on a voyage to Batavia
(Jakarta) on the island of Java to trade silver for spices, tea, and coffee.
Near the end of the voyage the ship exploded, the brandy caught fire and lit
the gunpowder. Captain Bontekoe was saved and led about 70 men, in a small
boat with sails made of clothing and almost no food or water, navigating by
the stars, safely ashore.

Authors account of country life and encounters with natural history in his
garden. Super illustrations thoughout. D/w a little chipped, with small

clipped but otherwise clean and good. A super natural history title.
