B323 Broadway Boogie Woogie, 1942-1943 Oil on canvas, 127x127 cm Signed lower left in red on blue: PM and lower right in red on blue 42 | 43 MoMA New York, given anonymously S590, O464, B- Owners: 1943 Maria Martins, through Valentine Dudensing (NY); 1943 MoMA. The detail photograph is from Virginia Pitts-Rembert's excellent Mondrian in the USA. There's an interesting article by Michael Sciam on B323 here. A more general study of PM's works is also on the site. Sciam has tried to engage with the major Mondrian academics but has been largely ignored. This entry is getting rather messy and so some of the images have been moved to the next row. [Feb 2012] Mondrian and B323 on film. I had previously been aware of a film of Mondrian, Calder and a cat shown at the 2010 Paris exhibition, but another film was discovered in 2008. |
|
The first photograph from the 1969 Orangerie exhibition catalogue. Not sure where I found the second, but CR attributes it (presumably both) to Fritz Glarner, taken in early 1943 in Mondrian's 353 East 52nd Street studio. Oh dear, the last entry is, apparently, from MMe Tussauds in Amsterdam, found in Flickr. |

Items B325 through B411 are studies and sketches. I might document some of these in due course. Those on cigarette packets are mentioned elsewhere. Items B412 through B415 are items of furniture which Mondrian made for his own use. Items U1 through U27 are Unidentifiable References - I'll list the interesting ones Items C1 through C155 are the Late Naturalistic Works, including C34 - C153, flowers. |
