[24Jun13] I saw my first Moss paintings in the 2012 Mondrian exhibition in Rome. Since then, all has gone quiet on the Moss front, but this week, two pieces of news: an exhibition and a Moss up for sale.
[24Jun13] For sale at Sotheby's, London on 11-12th July 2013 Marlow Moss White, Red and Black, 1949 From the sales catalogue, Provenance Gimpel & Hanover Gallery, Zürich, where acquired by the present owner, 4th September 1979 Exhibited Zürich, Gimpel & Hanover Gallery, Marlow Moss: Constructions, Drawings, Paintings, 1st December 1973 - 19th January 1974, cat. no.17, illustrated, with tour to Gimpel Fils, London. [11Jul13] It sold for £ 56,250. We called in to see it on the day of the sale and a kind, enthusiastic and entertaining Sotheby's employee took it off the wall to let us examine the back. The pieces of wood are just glued to the canvas and are working loose. I bought some lottery tickets, just in case the Gods of Chance wanted me to own it: I won £16.50 which will easily pay for the materials to make one. |
