Summary

12th January 2013 (still checking, Feb 2014)
Six stamps left requiring NBs, before reconsidering those of which better copies are needed. These are the only ones currently featuring in the weekly search:
  • 6d - SG194 9th April - two left
  • 9d - SG86-8; SG98 or SG110-11 [11th March - three left]; SG195
  • 10d - SG112-4 9th March - four left
  • 1/- - SG90 16th Jan - five left
18th November
Time to start mopping up the non-NBs to complete some sets:
  • ½d - SG339 - will finish the set
  • 2d - SG727 TII - ditto
  • 3d - SG444 and SG642
  • 4d - SG445 - last one
  • 10d -SG448 and SG474
18th August
As noted below, an enforced absence while at Edinburgh has occasioned a change of strategy - weekly searches for specific SGs, targetting the initalled stamps. Those needed are:
  • 2d - SG189
  • 3d - SG159, SG191
  • 4d - SG152, SG192
  • 5d - SG193
  • 6d - SG194
  • 9d - SG86-8, SG98 or SG110-11, SG195
  • 10d - SG112-4
  • 1/- SG90, SG196

Priorities [14th July]
  • Now that I have SG5ish, finishing the 2d line should be a priority. SG189 is not an NB[it is now], but will do, so just SG727 TII
  • Looking at the 3ds next makes sense, perhaps a non-NB SG191, then a stroll with a Bexley Box.
  • At the other end, I have been toying with the 1/-s where there are only two QV spaces and a G5.
Priorities [27th June]
Good progress against the 17th June list. When recent purchases arrive, the (in some cases newly-defined goals for) 2½d, 7d and 8d will be complete.

  • Continue with the daily sweeps (I'll be relieved when those can stop)
  • Look for inexpensive non-NB examples of the SG187-196 lilacs and greens, then replace with NBs over time.
    187 - 188 - 189 - 190 - SG191 - 192 - 193 - 194 - 195 - 196.
  • Try for another group, perhaps the 1880/81 SG164-169 set: SG164/5 - SG166 - SG167 - SG168/a - SG169.
  • This suggests an alternative chronological slicing which will be fun to analyse.
[8th June, in preparation for Orpington]
  • A decent SG206 to finish off the 4½ds
  • I'll take the Machin album to fill in spaces on the regular perforations and make a start on the elliptical.
  • ½ds - I just need SG164/5, SG187, a mint SG213 and either SG322 or SG339/40 (depending on which version of the beard I currently have). I'll wait for the next Bexley Box for these.
  • 1d
  • 1½d
  • 2d - SG4-6 is the largest hole in the current collection, then SG168, SG189, SG727 type II (denomination spacing, close to edge).
  • 2½d
  • 3d - SG159, SG191, SG444, SG467, SG492, SG642.
  • 4½d
  • 5d - SG193, SG381/2, SG446, SG469, SG778
  • 6d - although complicated, the 6ds are doing rather well - SG162 got one, SG194, SG470,
  • 7d
  • 8d
  • 9d - SG86-8, SG98 or SG110-11, SG195 [9ds second last to the 4ds], SG392, SG473,
  • 10d - SG112, SG394, SG448, SG474
  • lld
  • 1/- SG72/3, SG90, SG196, SG396
  • conclusion - concentrate on 4½d SG206 - 8d SG390 - the 1ds and the 1½ds, perhaps a 2d SG726 type II.

[22Aug14]
I have been busy on other projects for a while.
SG195 BiN £80. Overpriced.

[24Mar14]
Well blow me down. After two years of searching, my first view of an NB SG195. Buy it now £69.99. I think I'd go as high as £50, but £70 seems steep. I might have to see whether it goes round again.
22Feb, 8 Mar, 15 Mar Nothing new.

[15Feb14]
A few 99p NBs to keep an eye on, in particular this SG118 ending 22nd Feb. And
#2 SG212 BiN £195. I guess those guys in the Post Office in 1897 were intent upon ensuring that the stamp did not get recycled.
#1 sold for £25. I should have put in a bid, but probably wouldn't have gone that high.

[8Feb14]
Nothing to buy, but two nice pieces,
#1 a4-margin Penny Black for £359
Actually, the second was the set of four bantams below, still £795.
[6Jul13]
Nothing in scope, but a lovely SG118 2/-, BiN £132.
[20Jul13, 27Jul, 10Aug, 24Aug, 29 Aug, 5 Sep, 15 Sep, 28 Sep] Nothing new.
12 & 20, 27 Oct, 2 Nov, 9 Nov, 16 Nov, nothing new.
They did print NBs, did they? perhaps I should check for 'Px's, to verify.
23Nov, 1 Dec, nothing new.
4Jan14, 11Jan, 2Feb
[26Apr13, 4May13, 11 May, 18 May, 26 May, 1 Jun] Nothing new.
[8 Jun] Nothing new to buy, though a fine security lettering example Buy it Now £795.
[22Jun13] Nothing new.
[25Apr13]
Tempted again by an SG118 2/-, although it is out of scope, but came second. It sold for £18.99.
[20Apr13]
Nothing new
[6Apr13]
#1 SG194 starts at 99p, ends 9th April.
[9th] Bought for £2.80. Not the greatest of stamps, but an excellent price.

[30Mar13]
Nothing new, but I was tempted by an improved SG166 for £3.74.
[23Mar13]
Nothing new
[22Mar13]
Royal Mail have me by the curlies on new definitives. I thought the last set was expensive at £3.90 plus £1.45 postage. This time it's £7.45 plus postage. I managed to get some machins recently from a Bexley Box and will add a scan in due course.
[17Mar12]
Nothing new.
[11Mar13]
I submitted what I thought was a stupidly high bid with six seconds to go on the SG111 and I guess the guy who came second had done the same, with the result that I just managed to win it.
SG111 bought for £36.
Three to go.
[9Mar13]
SG112 bought for £27.26
Nothing new on the weekly check.
[3Mar13]
Action at last ... by gum, two! (I eschewed the exclamation mark on the first, but think it appropriate for a second).
I might get the first, but the SG112 looks rather too pretty for my budget.

[26Jan13]
Nothing new.
[19Jan13]
Not much new on offer, other than [1] a near-NB SG194 ending in three days, currently at £4.25 with five bids. Nice cancel and well-centred, but a grubby stamp and not worth the extra when compared to [2] my 99p NC spacefiller from 15th Dec.
It sold for £16.
1 2
[12Jan13]
#1 SG90 NB, nicely coloured, interestingly perforated, messily cancelled with some foxing. A stamp with character. Starting at 99p and finishing in four days. This would finish the 1/-s. Bought 16th Jan for £12.05.
Plus several of the regular suspects.

No new NBs
[22Dec12]
Nothing new on the weekly checks
#1 But a near NB (GB) SG86 for £1.20 during the week.
1
[18Dec12]
Back to decimals, where my attention must turn soon, as Royal Mail have announced some colour changes on 3rd January.
#1 The presentation pack sells for £3.90 plus an irritating £1.45 postage.
1
[15Dec12]
#1 I missed the end of the SG110 which wasn't an NB but which could have passed for one at a distance. It sold for £11.61.
#2 But, by a narrow margin, won the non-NB SG195 which completes the prelimanary pre-decimal collection. £14.
#3 And, found during the weekly search, a near-NB spacefiller SG194 bought for 99p.

Weekly check - several known and excessively-priced NBs, but nothing new.

[9Dec12]
I've been trying to chase down a spacefiller 9d Sg195 as it's the only pre-decimal stamp I don't have. Two failures so far.
#1 This poor example sold on 8th for £17.66. I didn't bid.
#2 Sold for £14.78 on 9th, I came second.
#3, the worst of the bunch but closest to an NB starts at 99p and ends on 15th Dec.
SG1951 SG1952 SG1953
[8Dec12]
No clear new NBs in the weekly check.
Though this messy SG110 might be an NB. Ends 13th.
[5Dec12]
#1 SG642-44 for £1 completes the 3ds.
[4Dec12]
#1 Nearly sticking to my rule of £10 or less for a non-NB, this SG110 for £12.39. I don't know why the 9d spacefillers sell for so much more than other values.
1
[3Dec12]
#1 a nice illustration of corner lettering, but not worth £99.
#2 a reminder from 19th July of my 99p illustrative piece.

[1Dec12]
No new initials in the weekly check, but a viable G5 3d SG444, starting at 99p and finishing tomorrow.
[2Dec12] Bought for 99p.

#1 SG339 BiN for £1.75.
#2 SG727 TII BiN for 99p - I hope it's the type 2 I'm missing

[11Oct12]
#1 A remarkably poor SG72, but see previous comments on spacefillers. £1.50.
[6Oct10]
Weekly check, not much to report.
#1 A space-filling SG90, near-NB starting at £2.99
#2 A poor SG185, yours for £250.
#3 Four SG45s starting with an NB BiN £69.50.

#1 I missed the end of the nearish SG98 which sold for £26.60 . I probably wouldn't have bid that much for an NR
Weekly check
#2 This pale and scarred SG152is back, down from £19.99 to £12.99. I might.
#3 SG196, noted in August, still on sale for £29.99, with a Make Offer option.

[26Sep12]
#1 I bought another non-NB SG112 - not sure why, but done in a bit of a rush: £23.
#2 earlier missed the end of the nearish SG159 which sold for £3.19

[21Sep12]
Rather a good week,
#1 They all come round eventually: here at last is a decent SG159 NB starting at 99p. It's running for 9 days, so the seller is expecting a good turnout.
#2 SG98 nearly an NB starting at 99p
#3 SG112 another nearly now at £4.20.

[15Sep12]
Two purchases of near NBs
#1 SG192 £3.49
#2 SG193 £5

#3 An SG159 nearling starting at 99p, ending 23rd Sep
No new NBs.

[10Sep12]
Another weekly check.
#1 SG152 rather overpriced, starting at £19.99
#2 This SG192 has been going round since 31st May. Starts at £22.49.
But I might be able to complete the 4ds for 40 notes plus an SG445.

#3 An SG193, perilously close to an NB and with a nice Brighton cancel for £17.99.
Arthur Ryan's SG90 and the SG196 are still on sale.
1 2 3
[5Sep12]
Another Bexley Box already, providing
#1 SG381 £2
#2 SG778 2p

That's the 5ds partially complete: I still need SG193 with the right letters.
I should, perhaps, explain that the 1969 SG778 is the first 5d commem and the only one continuing the shortlived blue colour scheme. It barely merits inclusion.

[1Sep12]
#1 Sg191 came second at £9.48 Not an NB and little better than the one I had already bought for £6.65.
#2 Well blow me down, an SG191 NB BiN £5.60 and from one of my least favourite dealers, Arthur Ryan.

Weekly check complete, nothing to watch. Next check 8th September.

[9Jul12] #2 this is a poor SG159, but, as noted below, better a spacefiller than a space. 99p.
A lesson which I had thought I learned years ago on ebay, but sometimes forget with stamps is 'it always comes round again'.

#1 SG90 Arthur Ryan have this as a Buy it Now for £25.30. I nearly succumbed, but I don't like BiNs and I don't like Arthur Ryan as they didn't respond to my requests for NBs. So, I'll wait.
#2 SG189 starting at 99p.

The new approach seems to be working. Next SG192.

[17Aug12]
Nearly a week away at the Edinburgh Festival means that I have missed days of checks for Victoria initials. I was, in any case, beginning to tire of those checks and so I will switch to a new scheme, checking for specific SG numbers. The table above identifies the numbers needed, and so I will just run those, plus a check for NBs over the course of a week.
One near NB auction won while in Edinburgh:
#1 SG191 £6.65.

#1 SG79(-82) £1.99. The 4ds are coming along nicely.

[9Aug12]
#1 SG2 starting at £149.95. Rather fully-priced.
#2 Sg160 for £8.50.

#1 The seller kindly relisted this misperforated SG43 as I missed the end of the first auction - 99p. I think it provides a neat and concise illustration of how the corner numbering system works.
[17Jul12]
#1 Quite a nice SG164 for £3.20.
[16Jul12]

[14Jul12]
#1 I won the SG4-6 by putting in an absurdly high bid to ensure success at a, nevertheless excessive, £44.50. No margins, overpriced, but a delight.
#2 SG166, nicer than the one I have, starts at 99p

[13Jul12]
I've been following a few 1/- SG72s and some G5s. Here they are:
#1 sold for £24. I didn't bid.
#2 sold for £19.40, again without my help.
#3 SG394 £6.55 - I came second
#4 Sg381 £5.88. No bid.
I'll continue to trail SG72s, but I think the G5s are overpriced at 30% of catalogue: as stated early in this process, these might be best pursued in a Bexley Box. Unfortunately, the boxes seem to have ground to a halt.
SG5 tomorrow: that's the big one.

#1 Sg153 £9.51., won while cycling in the gym.
#2 SG446 £3
#3 SG189 missing perfs and not NB, but a start for £3.41

[7Jul12]
#1 At last an Sg5, not much in the way of margins, my kind of stamp, starting at £10.99
#2 SG212, with a Gibbons Guarantee starting at £310
#3 that nice SG2 BiN £195 and the 6th June NA-NB pair has come around again.
#4 a pleasing SG43 misperforation starting at 99p.
#5 I didn't have internet access when this ended, but would probably not have bid anyway. Overprices at £20 BiN. The rest of the world (or at least the ebay universe) agreed - no bids.

[4Jul12]
#1 The nearly NB SG159 with a companion 6d o/p escaped me, selling for £17.89 with ten bids.
#2 But I got the SG168 for £6.50.
#3 a poor image of what seems to be a very poor SG159, but a spacefiller is better than a space. Starts at 99p.
#4 This specimen SG189 is back again at BiN £275.
#5 I have previously rejected this SG160 as messy and overpriced at BiN £11.99, but I'm beginning to wonder.

Summary saved at the end of June

Priorities [27th June]
Good progress against the 17th June list. When recent purchases arrive, the (in some cases newly-defined goals for) 2½d, 7d and 8d will be complete.

  • Continue with the daily sweeps (I'll be relieved when those can stop)
  • Look for inexpensive non-NB examples of the SG187-196 lilacs and greens, then replace with NBs over time.
    187 - 188 - 189 - 190 - 191 - 192 - 193 - 194 - 195 - 196.
  • Try for another group, perhaps the 1880/81 SG164-169 set: SG164/5 - SG166 - SG167 - SG168/a - SG169.
  • This suggests an alternative chronological slicing which will be fun to analyse.
Priorities [17th June]
  • SG433 (BEE brown 1925) to finish the 1½ds - £80/55.
  • SG219 Ed7 1d scarlet £3/2
  • SG327 light lion £10/5
  • SG430 (BEE red 1924) for the 1ds - £12/10
  • then SG170/1 (14 dots) to finish the 1ds - £200/30
A question needs to be asked on the 7ds: do I really need SG387 (olive), SG388 (bronze-green) and SG389 (sage green)? Identification seems utterly random on ebay, so for the moment I am inclined to get whichever comes along first and that will do for now. There are extremes from brown to green which can be explored, but a lot of this is dancing on the head of a pin. Onwards:
  • SG194 6d would finish the set, but these are elusive - I haven't seen an NB yet - £450/200.
The 2½ds are asking to be completed with just a G5 (where, incidentally, I am not concerning myself with the varieties of blue) and E2 com
  • SG371 2½d blue, £22/12
  • SG532-535 coronation set £16/9.
  • 1d - I need SG171 (14 dots), SG219 mint, SG327 (light lion), SG430 (BEE 1924)
  • 1½d - SG167 and SG433 (BEE 1925)
  • 2d - SG4-6 is the largest hole in the current collection, then SG168, SG189, SG726 type II.
  • 2½d - SG371, SG491, SG532
  • 3d - SG159, SG191, SG444, SG467, SG492, SG642
  • 4d - SG66, SG79-82, SG152, SG153, SG154/160, SG192 [this group suggests that 4d will be the last to complete], SG445, SG533.
  • 4½d
  • 5d - SG193, SG381/2, SG446, SG469, SG778
  • 6d - although complicated, the 6ds are doing rather well - SG162 got one, SG194, SG470,
  • 7d - SG387, SG388, SG389, SG471,
  • 8d - SG390
  • 9d - SG86-8, SG98, SG195 [9ds second last to the 4ds], SG392-4, SG473,
  • 10d - SG112, SG394, SG448, SG474
  • 1/- - SG72/3, SG90, SG196, SG429
  • lld
  • conclusion - concentrate on 4½d SG206 - 8d SG390 - the 1ds and the 1½ds, perhaps a 2d SG726 type II.

Penny reds and twopence blue NBs ignored

#1 That's a nice SG160 starting at £20. Rather overpriced.
#2 Also a nice SG48, also overpriced at £110.
#3 HB is close, the pair starts at £1.
#4 That's the second Coronation set I have failed on. Sold for £5.88.
#5 I also had a tilt yesterday at a set of non NB SG192,3,4 on the basis of get the sets then look for the NBs. But, having pulled in at the side of the M11 for a bid, I failed. Sold for £37.36.
And finally, #6 SG387 my bid didn't even register. 6 bids, sold for £11.50.
So, on the rebound, #7 I went for this BiN for £5. I'll seek a brown one to partner it.

# This pair of Penny Blacks is back again for 30 days at £350.

A few NBs found tonight, SG141 and some Penny reds, but nothing worth reporting in detail.

#1 There was an NA-NB pair of Penny Blacks on 5th April selling for£350. This NB-NC pair starts at £475. Nice, but more than I'll ever spend on stamps. [4Jun] Didn't sell, relisted4th June at the same price.

#1 SG4 I need one of these. Starting at £85 and with 9 days to go, I doubt it will be this one, but we'll see. Probably the nicest NB since this exercise began.

Also, it occurred to me today that the 1ds could be finished off pretty easily, not to mention the ½s. Think on.

[25May12]
#1 An nice SG45 starting at £2.99. Nicer than mine, so I might.

A good day today
#4 SG94 Not needed.

[24May12]
#1 SG212 not perfect, but easily good enough for me and it starts at 99p.
Many high values coming on tonight, even a couple of VR Penny Black officials. Here's another NB,
#2 SG186, Buy it Now, £9,995.

The curvature of the 'postage one pound' around the central image is quite mesmerising.

[23May12]
#1 Another SG143 for 99p: couldn't resist it. I'm getting to like these bold cancels: the postal worker must have been a meticulous chap.
#2 What a sad little stamp, but I don't think I'll rescue it, even at €0.99 (80p).
At least two new NB Penny Reds tonight, but I don't bother with those.

[22May12]

#2 SG141 not needed.

[21May12]

I have placed a modest bid on the 1/- embossed ending tomorrow but there's another coming along in 4 days starting at 99p which is more my style.

#1 A lovely SG163 starting at 99p but unlikely to end in my price range.
#2 And a pretty SG157 also at 99p, though I already have two.

Only a cursory glance at the new offerings on ebay tonight as I am being distracted by a new sideline in Mariannes.

#1 From a BPS stamp box, SG449, SG447, SG437 and SG2473 for £7.10
#2 The pair of SG4s sold to the only bidder for £179.99.
#3 The £1 SG212 failed to sell and is back on for another month at the same price, BiN £150.
#4 SG176 BiN £345.
#5 SG190 BN starting at 99p. Not needed - I already have a BN, but still need an NB.
#6 A sweet block of six Penny Reds starting at 99p. I would like a block of four something inexpensives just to demonstrate how the letters run.

#2 Royal Mail's latest offerings. They have the gall to add a £1.45 handling charge.

#1 SG83 bought for £12.05.
#2 A good pair of SG4s starting at £179.99.

[16May12]
#1 SG125 bought for £4.31.
#2 I already have an SG143, but this bold example is worth a punt.
#3 SG179 not in scope and, in any case, bought one on 5th May. Starts at 99p.
#4 SG97 BiN £ 17.99. Significantly overpriced and not needed.

As the 6ds are going quite well, I checked all the SG162s (6d o/p) on ebay. There are 209 sales, >230 stamps as some sales are multiples, but no NBs. #5 is close, an NC BiN £31.50. And while on the subject of overprints, there are 147 SG159 3d sales, similarly uncluttered by NBs. I have often wondered why these are overprinted with their face value, presumably it was a recognition aid - I'll find out.

#1 Four SG115-17s, one an NB. Starts at £79.95, ends 22nd May, not needed.
#2 SG106 starts at £8.99, ends 19th May. Not needed.
#3 SG55 starts at £10, ends 22nd May.

[11May12]
#1 The cancel looks better than the stamp, but it's a welcome addition and at £2.85 for two SG101s, that's worth having.
#2 SG2, fully-priced at £55. BiN.
#3 a poor SG147 starts 99p ends 17th May not needed.
#4 in fact it's a busy few days for SG147s, this starts at 99p and ends on 15th.

Having bought a 1/- tonight, I wondered about finishing the embossed series but, unusually, there are no cut to shape 1/-s presently on sale.

#1 I thought I had this one in the bag with 4 seconds to go, but came second. Sold for £16.89.
#2 SG83 starts at 99p. Needed.
#3 SG147 BiN £8.95. Not needed.
1 2 3
[9May12]
#1 Another Bantam attracted four bids (none of them mine) and sold for £5.83.
#2 I won't be buying this SG115, but include it because it is a pretty marginal stamp with a great cancel from the town of my birth, 84 years before my birth. BiN £39.50.

[8May12]
The Bantams keep coming:
#1 bought it for £1.51. (Can't let an NB, or even a BN go for 99p.)

#4 or mint, BuyItNow for £60.

#1 This pair has been around several times starting in the £30s, but now they're starting at 99p. All things come to he who waits. Sold for £13.03.
#2 A super stamp starting at £1.
#3 By contrast, this SG125 is rather a mess. I need one, though, so we'll have to see how it goes, starting at 99p
1 2 3
[5May12]
#1 It's outside of the game plan, but I logged in with 4 minutes to go and there was one bid sitting at 99p. I bought it for £1.71. Missing a corner, but worth that.
#2 a nice SG40 BiN £8.99.
1 2
[4May12]
#1 Two SG101s, one an NB, starting at 99p. It is a shame that there are two stamps involved, as it is not a great stamp and I'd be in with a chance on that alone. I guess I could always sell the other - I have an increasing stock of spare Victorians.
1
[3May12] A busy day:
#1 It was steady in the £20s for the best part of a week and so my cunning plan was to leap in with a £35 bid with a minute to go. But then the bids reached £48 with still five hours to go and I was wondering whether I could justify paying £51. It eventually sold for £79 with 19 bids, none of them mine. So it goes.
#2 SG125 starting at 99p. Got one. [Oops, no I don't.]
#3 A pleasant, albeit creased SG8, already in stock.
#4 SG178 BiN £14.99. I think this is the first time this one has been up.
#5 SG160, steep starting at £20. I need one, but probably not at that price.
#6 SG94 starting at £9, got one.

#7a and 7b not NBs but two beautifully-cancelled Penny Blacks. BiN £119.99 and starting at 99p respectively. They must have just recharged their inkpads for this pair. #7a sold within a few hours for £119.99.

[1May12]
#1 Of course, now I've bought an SG48, they'll start turning up again. This more of a BN than an NB, and not in good contition, starts at 99p.
#2 Nice stamp, poor scan, starts at 1p with a reserve - that's not common. 23 bids from 9 bidders, reached £85, but failed to meet the reserve.
#3 And a pretty Penny Red starting at £7.99.

Lots of big finishes today and tomorrow, four Buy It Nows. If they were proper auctions I would bid, but I'll probably give them a miss.

#1 SG14 £11.99. But then, building this entry, I note that I described it when found as "tempting". I succombed and bought it.
#2 SG34 for £17.60. Got one.
#3 An SG48 I have described as "overpriced" at £11.99. Well blow me down, I've bought that too. That is a relief, the lack of the first stamp on the list has frustrated me since I started.
#4 SG160 for £11.99. I'll try not to buy this one.

No NBs on the wanted list found today, just an average Penny Red which I haven't shown.

Quite a good day at Beckenham, although there were only a couple of GB dealers and some of the prices were full. I bought the 11d set, some of the 8ds, should have thought of getting a decent 4½d to finish that set. Also full sets of E8, G6 light and G6 UPU colours. Total cost about £11. Next fair Strand, May 9.

#2 not a great SG45 in terms of colour and perforations, but mine for £5.50.

#3 SG178 spacefiller, starting at 99p.
#4 a pretty SG117, one of four, starting at £79.95.
#5 a poor SG139 starts at a hopeful £4. Not needed.

#1 SG141 starting at £4.50. Overpriced and already got one.

Beckenham Stamp Fair on Saturday. A list is called for.
  • 11d SG474a and SG553 both mint - all the 11ds.
  • 8d SG390 M/U; SG391 M/U; SG472 M - complete the 8ds
  • ½d SG164/165 and SG187, probably used, SG322 mint and SG339-340 m/u, SG457 - full set - mint, SG485 and SG503 - again, get the full sets.
  • large numbers of elliptical Machins
  • and another set of the pre-decimal machins
[25Apr12]
#1 Tried but came second, it sold for £12.88. This is not altogether a bad thing as the chances of my getting a 2/- brown NB are pretty slim. That said, if another 2/- blue turns up starting at 99p, I expect I'll bid again.
#2 And I missed the end of the SG193 5d. It sold for £6.32.
#3 A pair of SG17s(?) BiN £10.99.

#4 And a reasonable SG45 thick, starting at £3.99.

#1 Another SG157, BiN £7.
#2 SG141 starting at 99p. Not needed.

There seems to be a lot of Bantams on ebay at the moment, but I'm not spotting any new NBs. This is particularly galling as my first purchase in this project was a non-NB Bantam, and I have been rueing it ever since. A quick search suggests that there are 180 SG48s and 51 SG49s currently on sale: I'll try a detailed search tomorrow.
They were printed 480 (24x20) to a page, so 231 (180+51) stamps should give an approximate 50% chance of an NB.

#1 SG190 2½d bought for £1.61.
#2 SG178 2/6, with a diagonal crease, starting at 99p.
#3 Five SG92s, one an NB, starting at 99p
#4 The first £1 NB found, SG212, selling for £150.

[19Apr12]
#1 I won this SG157 on a coach on the way to Durham - that's enough 157s.
#2 Another SG94 for sale, starting at £9, but not needed.
#3 Another SG77 starting at 99p - somewhat cleaner than mine, but not worth buying.
#4 SG47 perfin, starting at 99p. I'm ignoring perfins. [27Apr] Sold for £2.20 - perhaps I should.
#5 An SG101b pair on sale for a third time at £33.50. [27Apr] Round again at £39.99. [6May12] And again, but this time starting at 99p.
#6 But I missed the end of the auction for this, three SG45-7s, one an NB, which started at 1p and sold for £8.29. Harrumph.

[18Apr12]
No NBs, lost an auction for two old SG Specialised, vols 1 and 2.
[17Apr12]
#1 Another pair of SG8s, these selling for £49.99 and #2 a single SG8 for £99.99.
#3 A lovely SG117 starting at £14.99. [27Apr] Sold for £18.99 - nice stamp but it started overpriced and so I did not bid.

[16Apr12]
#1 I managed to snag this for £11.38 on the mobile while at 'work', DX46 Treasures of the Archive booklet. It has a few machins that are expensive singly and so I thought I might as well buy the whole thing.
#2 A block of four SG46s starting at 99p, sold on 22nd for £36.40 with 18 bids from 7 bidders.
#3 Three SG108s, one an NB, starting at £2.99 and #4 a rather poor SG97 starting optimistically at £9.99. Note to self - don't buy these, already in stock.
#5 SG163 on ebay selling for £22: better than mine, but a lot more expensive.
#6 SG120 2/-, starting at a modest 99p.Tried but came second, it sold for £12.88 .

[15Apr12]
#1 An annoying failure, this poor SG48 which went for £6.88, seriously overpriced for this messy stamp, even an NB.
#2 Success on the second, though, SG103 for £2.25.
#3 As noted in the research, that's a set of 3d small white (SG77), large white (SG103) and large coloured (SG143) corner letters.

[14Apr12]
#1, two SG51s on ebay, one an NB, starting at 99p.[24Apr] Bought for £9.50.
#2 a clean SG157 starting at £7. [28APr] Round again at £7.
1 2
[13Apr12] The 1977 high value set used for £3.60. The SG cat is £32 and Smiths £24, so that's 11% or 15%. Most of the stamps look decent except the £1.60.

Also spotted:
#2 and #3 two SG190s starting at 60p and 99p.
1 2 3
[12Apr12]
#1 SG10 mint, described at cat £800, starting at 99p (so nice, you can click to enlarge). [22Apr] I led the auction briefly at £52 with 30 seconds to go, but the final price was £79.03, an orderly 17 bids from 14 bidders.
#2 SG45-7 (are those lines thick or thin?), three stamps, one NB, starting at 1p.
#3 A pair of 2/6s, one an NB, starting at 99p.

[11Apr12]
A beautifully coloured but imperfectly formed SG43 for £5.50. It's good to have a Penny Red rather than a Penny Brown.

You don't get many 2/- browns coming through ebay and no NBs yet. I kept an eye on this, just to get an idea of prices. It sold with 34 bids from 19 bidders for £749.89, 23% of cat.

Still waiting for the first NB 10/-, £1 or higher.
[10Apr12]
#1 I normally skip over the Penny Reds when trawling ebay, but sometimes one pops up, this starting at 85p.
#2 SG141 starting at a hefty £4.99.
#3 SG176 optimistically priced at £695 and #4 A lot of over-priced high values at the moment, another SG176, this one for £345.

[9Apr12] An interesting find in Smith's today, Stamp Magazine's British Stamp Market Values 2012. Described as 'Exclusive to WH Smith', it is also available from Amazon at £7.47, a 32% discount. This claims to provide realistic prices for all GB stamps. I'll add them to the pre-decimal page.
[8Apr12] Not quite sure why I bought this when I already have an SG94.
But I did, £9.99.
[7Apr12]
#1 bantam NB on ebay, starting at a sensible £1.99.
#2 Here's another SG156 selling for £39.99. Better colour than mine, but I'm content.

[6Apr12]
Two won, two lost today: the wins were both NBs, so they would have been my first choices.
#1 SG163, the only NB example I have seen since starting. The cancel is not pretty but the initials are beautifully clear. £5.61 was a good price at 3.7% cat.
#2 At £11.50, I probably paid too much for this SG77 at 4.6% cat. It's my first small white.
The losses were a 1/- embossed which went for £16.89 and a 2d SG168a for £10.

Also found:
#3 a pair of Penny Reds starting at £8.99. [24Apr12] round again at the same price.
#4 SG117 (large white) on ebay starting at £24.99

[5Apr12]
#1 Penny Black with four good margins selling for £195 and #2 a nice pair for £350.[8th June] the pair is back again for £350.
#3 Another SG150, starting at 99p.

[4Apr12]
#1 SG43, a nice red starting at 99p. Not a perfect stamp, but a lovely colour, bought it for £5.50.
#2 SG190 m/m starting on ebay at 99p.
#3 Two embossed bought today, SG58 6d for £10.83 and #4 SG57 10d for £13.27.
I knew buying a non-NB SG156 was a mistake, but prices for this stamp are all over the place. #5 popped up on ebay tonight for £22.99 (7.6% cat). That's the best SG156 NB I'm likely to see in a twelve-month, so I now have two.
#6 SG181 5/- and #7 SG178 2/6, both starting at 99p.
1 2 3 4 5 6 7
[3Apr12]
#1 a bold, well-margined SG5 available for £330 (50% cat) and
#2 a rather ropey SG14 for £20 (20% cat). Both desirable but overpriced, then
#3 a more tempting SG14 for £11.99.
#4 is a much more attractive stamp in terms of colour, margins and cancellation but again unrealistically priced at £27.99.
All four stamps are, unfortunately, selling as Buy it now items at a fixed price rather than auctions.
Two 2/6s, #5 SG178 on sale for £17.99 and #6 SG179 for £19.99.

[1Apr12] As with the Victoria Jubilee set below, I have bought a set of the Ed7 equivalents to initially fill the spaces and will gradually replace them with nicer stamps. The cost was £4.19: Gibbons doesn't list a set price.
Whan both Jubilee sets have arrived, I'll update the spreadsheet with acquisitions, Jubilees in orange.

And it must be time to start monitoring the embossed issues. The cut to shape stamps sold for a fraction of the cut square and I have no notion why the non-stampy bits of paper make so much difference, so I'll aim for a set of shapes.

[31Mar12]
SG190 for 75p.
[30Mar12] I bought #1, the spacefiller, non-NB SG156 for £10.38. I'm not sure why.
Not a great day at the auctions, bought an SG156 I didn't really want and failed to log a bid for a bargain spacefiller SG152 that I did. There's a 1/- SG150 finishing later which I'll try for.
Things are looking up, got #2, the 1/- for £10.01.

Also noted:
#3 SG147 selling for £125, seriously overpriced and already got one.
#2 SG163 1/- brown, starting at 99p [6Apr12] got it for £5.61.
#4 a lovely SG180 for £795.

Purchases and this entry posted from a Brighton campsite,
#1 Bought with the only bid at £1.99.
#2 Victoria Jubilee set, used. The intention is to try and pick these up individually mint but to start with a full used set which sell for reasonable prices on ebay, this for £33.82, 9% of cat.

Also noted:
#3 SG95 [not in my list], a poor scan on ebay, starting at £9.99.
#4 SG180 5/- with crease, starting at £4.99 [5Apr12] Round again at £2.99. [16Apr12] And again at £2.99.
#5 SG178 2/6 sold on 29Mar for £9.05.

[27Mar12]
#1 SG8 described as 'listed basal shift': no idea what that means. Starting at £24.99.
#2 SG190 starting on ebay at 75p. Got it for 75p.
#3 SG156 starting at 99p. Not an NB, but worth considering as an interim solution. [30Mar] I paid £10.38 for it and I'm not sure why: I might as well have run to £20 for #2.
#4 a nice SG101b pair starting at £44. [4Apr12] This pair on sale again, this time at £55. [19Apr12] And again at £33.50.

#1, a nice SG188 on ebay, starting sensibly at £1.99. In with a chance.
#2 SG106 starting at £10.99 on ebay. Probably too much for a rather messy stamp. [28Apr] ROund again at £9.99.

A look at some of the 5ds needed:
#1 169
#2 A poor SG193, the only NB so far, selling for £17.50. [16Apr12] Back again, this time for a nine-day auction starting at 99p. It's a shame about the foxing, but nevertheless, worth keeping an eye on.
#3 SG207a, sold for £10.50.
#4 SG293
#5 SG381
#6 SG446
#7 SG778
#8 A rather nice Penny Black (though described as having 'faults not visible from the front'). Sold for £34.

#1 SG94 for £3.45, 6% of cat, #2 SG35 for £6.75 (12%) and #3 SG109 for £7.99 (10%).

Also available, but not bought,
#4 an unattractive SG45 rather fully priced at £10.
#5 is much prettier, but is going for £34.

#1 SG156 £175 on ebay. There are much cheaper copies on sale, so I'm hoping that it's simply a matter of patience.
#2 In fact here's one for £20: a bit of a mess, but priced to go.

[13Mar12]
#1 SG94 - not a pretty stamp, but it starts at 99p. Ending in five days. Mine for £3.45, 6% of catalogue.
#2 Another SG94, rather nicer, selling at £6.99.
#3 SG160 - £11.99, rather over-priced and not quite pretty enough.
#4 SG192 - I can handle a heavy cancellation, but this is too messy to consider. Selling at £14.99.

9 Mar 12 From Michael Kay, £12.60 for five packs of Hawid clear mounts.
[8Mar12]
#1 On ebay at £7.99 (10% of cat) SG109. Poorly centred, the cancel is clean but rather extensive. I might. [18th] I did.

7 Mar 12, ebay
I plan to take this apart, discarding all the pages of pointless post-60s commemoratives, and use the remainder for a wants list.

The plan to dismember the book was abandoned as the pages are too large to fit in my trusty A5 Filofax folder.
[6Mar12]
#1 SG166 on ebay, starting at 79p, finishing in four days. Has to be worth a punt at that price.
#2, a nice SG51 on ebay, but overpriced at £100. I'll wait for another. #3 SG141 on ebay for £5.99, finishing in two days. Probably just about worth that. [8Mar] I bought it.

[5Mar12]
#1 1958 Crowns Wmk Wildings for a reasonable £6.50. Missing the expensive 11d from that set, but will seek the SG553 which sells for pence.

And #2 the 1940 Centenary set for £1.50.

#1 Appropriately the first acquisition is the first stamp, a bantam ½d for £12.49. Inevitably I then found one with my initials #2 selling for £17.99: not as good a stamp, but I would have preferred it. So it goes.

[26Feb12]
#1 I failed in my first attempted purchase on this project, a 6d NB on eBay which went for £6. Not a great example with some foxing and damaged perfs, but a handsome NB and a disappointing start.
